DALLAS–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Susan G. Komen®, the world’s largest breast cancer
organization, and Formula 1®, the pinnacle of motorsport, are
turning innovation pink – on and off the track – with “Drive for the Cure®”
at the 2017 FORMULA 1 UNITED STATES GRAND PRIX in Austin Oct. 20-22.
Whether watching the big race onsite or from home, millions of Formula 1
enthusiasts worldwide will notice this year’s epic event donned in pink
– from the Pirelli tires to the track – with Drive for the Cure. Formula
1 followers, friends, and fans are urged to donate to Komen’s metastatic
breast cancer research program and to community health programs funded
by Komen’s Austin Affiliate.
Formula 1 and Komen share several values, innovation is one of them.
Komen focuses on saving lives by meeting the most critical needs in our
communities and investing in breakthrough research to prevent and cure
breast cancer. Komen has set a Bold Goal to reduce the current number of
breast cancer deaths by 50 percent in the U.S. by 2026 by focusing on
research into aggressive and metastatic breast cancer – the cancer that
kills – and on programs to ensure access to quality breast cancer care
for all. With the help of Formula 1, Komen is racing toward a year-end
finish line to raise funds.
There will be lots of ways to support Drive for the Cure at COTA:
grabbing a bite at the concession stand, swinging for a long drive at
TopGolf Crush®, engaging in the countless fan activities
within the Fanzone at the Austin event, and more.
Those unable to make the race in Austin can still contribute to helping
find the cures by donating directly to metastatic research and local
community programs at www.komen.org/F1.
“This year, we’re drawing increased attention to metastatic breast
cancer – the breast cancer that takes the lives of nearly all the 40,000
men and women that die from this disease every year in the U.S.,” said
Komen Senior Vice President of Development Christina Alford. “Formula 1
has provided us an exciting new platform on which to raise our voices
about the reality of people living with metastatic disease and the
researchers trying to end it.”
“This ground-breaking partnership will mark a very special moment on
this year’s Formula 1 calendar as we physically alter key elements of a
Grand Prix weekend to highlight Breast Cancer Awareness Month. We are in
a unique position as one of the most watched sports in the world – and
the only truly global sport that competes annually – with over half a
billion fans across the globe to help elevate awareness for such an
important cause,” said Managing Director, Commercial Operations at
Formula 1, Sean Bratches. “This is an opportunity to use the Formula 1
platforms as a force for social good and rally support for the fight
against breast cancer, a disease which affects millions of people every
year. It is gratifying to see the entire Formula 1 community, from the
teams, drivers, the FIA, sponsors and broadcasters, unite and focus its
collective will to give back.”
“It is an honor for all of us at COTA to play host to this budding
partnership between Susan G. Komen and Formula 1. Breast Cancer affects
millions of people worldwide and we are proud to join in the fight to
find a cure,” said Chairman of Circuit of The Americas, Bobby Epstein.
“The United States Grand Prix has shown itself time and again to be one
of the most exciting and thrilling race weekends on the F1 calendar and
this year we will harness this energy to help raise funds to combat this
terrible disease. We welcome our fans to join us in this endeavor
alongside Susan G. Komen and Formula 1. Together we will stand up to
