BRUSSELS, 27 April 2017 / PRN Africa / — European Parliament President, Antonio Tajani, met with the Grand Mufti of Egypt, Dr Shawki Allam.
President Tajani stated:
“I had a very constructive meeting with the Grand Mufti of Egypt. I want to express my full support to Egypt and assure that the European Parliament is by its side in the aftermath of the attacks that shook the country earlier this month. Egypt is a key regional player in the shared fight against terrorism. The Grand Mufti’s role is essential and I salute his unwavering condemnation of terror, his efforts to foster dialogue and his calls to respect cultural and religious diversity. I asked him to act in order to increase awareness and help stop the attacks against Christians and other religious minorities in Egypt.
“Radicalisation is a complex phenomenon that can only be tackled thanks to a strong commitment to solutions driven by the spirit of interreligious dialogue and cooperation. In this context, education plays a key role in teaching fundamental values to young people. Social media must be used to contrast poisonous propaganda with positive messages and women have to be able to build upon the key role they already play in stemming the phenomenon.
“We also need to reinforce our legislative framework so that it specifically addresses and adapts itself to the scourge of radicalisation in a timely manner, from judicial cooperation to the exchange of intelligence.”
